Let’s get the disappointing news out of the way early. No, sadly we didn’t get confirmation today that the next DLC fighter coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would indeed be a Tetris 99 block. It is instead yet another character from the Fire Emblem series. Byleth will be playable for those that have purchased the game’s Fighter Pass from January 28th, making them the last of the five character packs originally promised.
The news was revealed in today’s Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct, in which Super Smash Bros. creator Sakurai went in detail about how Byleth will play compared to the 7 other Fire Emblem characters already present in the game (not a joke!). Sakurai described the character as a “distance demon” when comparing them to other contenders, highlighting how both the female and male versions of Byleth are a great pick for anyone who prefers playing at a good range.
For more information on how Byleth will look and play, you can check out the new character trailer below:
Byleth joins SNK’s Terry, Banjo Kazooie, Joker and Dragon Quest Hero as the final fighter Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players will be getting as part of the current Fighters Pass. However, this doesn’t mark the end of new player characters entirely, as the recently announced Fighter Pass Vol. 2’s roster of fighters is still unknown.
How do you feel about today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character reveal? We wouldn’t have minded a character a little bit, you know, blockier, but either way it’s great to see such a prominent eSports game continue to be strongly supported. Sakurai did at least tease that another six fighters would be on their way as part of Fighters Pass Vol. 2 before the end of 2021. Here's hoping these characters will be just as diverse.
