The Nintendo Switch model has received a price cut across Europe, but is it enough?

Yes, just as many predicted last week, yesterday saw Nintendo officially slash the price of its standard Switch model. Whereas before the handheld/home console hybrid had a typical £279.99 here in the UK, now it’s fallen by a quaint but still appreciated £20. That means it’s now possible to buy a Nintendo Switch new just £259.99, with territories in wider Europe enjoying a similar saving.

The Nintendo Switch becoming slightly cheaper to purchase should no doubt be music to the ears of everyone, but especially those looking to pick one up heading into the holiday season. Last year – due to ongoing stock shortages – at one point Nintendo’s console stuck at a firm £299.99 to keep up with market expectations. So in-demand was the Switch that even certain retailers previously thought reputable succumbed to the price hike.

Now, however, the dockable Nintendo Switch model that was released in 2017 before receiving a minimal upgrade to improve battery life two years later, is just £259.99 at most UK retailers. But why is the House of Mario being so courteous all of a sudden? It’s no doubt a result of the company’s next console revision, the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, releasing next month. Hitting store shelves from October 8th onwards in both a Neon and White colourway, its release coincides with the launch of Metroid Dread.

The £20 price cut is sure to be popular amongst parents and folk who want to grab a Switch ahead of Christmas and aren’t too fussed about the OLED model’s improved screen. Surprisingly, though, US audiences won’t be able to enjoy an identical saving. "There are no plans to change the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for any Nintendo Switch model in the U.S," a representative told Axios reporter Stephen Totilo in a statement. The cut applies to just Europe and the UK

Is it enough of a discount to tempt you into a purchase over the OLED version?
