The Last Guardian spent decades in development hell, being the highly anticipated third game from legendary game studio, Team Ico, which previously treated PlayStation players to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. You play a young boy tasked with moving throughout an ancient world alongside a giant bird-dog creature, solving various puzzle solutions to progress. It’s considered one of the most whimsical games on PS4 and will sweep you up in its charming puzzle-filled journey.
As far as puzzle games go, Tetris is arguably the one that has been iterated upon the most – and with good reason. Its combination of difficult-to-learn but hard-to-master block dropping is some of the most addictive puzzle gameplay you can find, and it’s been wonderfully been brought to life in PS4’s Tetris Effect. It’s works in much the same way as prior Tetris games, only now your actions are mimicked to the music against 30 diverse stages. Tetris Effect is even playable in PSVR for those wanting to immerse themselves funny in Tetris’ tile-matching fun.
Utilising beautiful 2D pixel art to bring its world to life, Fez is a puzzle-platform game that sees levels and environments shift to 3D in order to let you reach high and hidden places. The goal of each world is to collect the scattered pieces of a cube, which when linked together allow opens up further worlds unknown for the central character, Gomez, to explore. You’ll need to think each location through laterally, settling on the right perspective which is best to carry on. Fez originally launched back in the PS3 era, but its legacy has proved so endearing that it is now a great PS4 puzzle game.
