Should I buy a PS4 on Cyber Monday?

The deals you can see above are the best that Cyber Monday has to offer on the PS4. The PS4 Slim 500GB bundle, with an RRP of £249.99, has been reduced by around £50, while the same is true of the Pro, which is down to £299 from £349.

So should you buy your PS4 on Cyber Monday? To be completely honest, it’s hard to say. While the prices above are good, they aren’t exactly earth-shattering; we’ve seen these prices at several points during the last two years, and compared to the big price cuts on the Xbox One, they’re a little underwhelming, particularly as the PS5 is only a year away.

We expect Ebay to run a sale later this week that will involve the likes of Currys, Argos and ShopTo. However, the price on the PS4 may well have reverted back to RRP by then, meaning even a 10 or 15% discount is unlikely to match the prices live right now. If you’re not desperate to shop online, then check out the latest event that Tesco are running in-store, where the PS4 can be had for even less.

The one caveat we would add is that the likes of Currys and Argos have Ebay stores, which typically match the price of their main websites. If Ebay run a discount code, which they do often in the week after Black Friday, then there are some potentially even bigger savings to be had, if you’re willing to hold out.

How much was the PS4 last year on Black Friday?

Last year, the Pro hit a low of around £299 (with a game included), while the Slim was discounted to, in most cases, £219 with two games (one of which was a relatively new major release, FIFA 19 or Red Dead Redemption 2), though an Ebay voucher code sale dropped the price further to £195 around a week after Black Friday. This year, we’ve seen the price of the Slim with a game drop to £209 during promo periods, while the Pro with a game has been £299. This suggests that we should see bigger deals on the PS4 than last year, particularly with the PS5 confirmed as on the way. As for Ebay sales, they don’t tend to typically run between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but can crop up in the week after, and can offer even further savings on prices from the likes of Currys and Argos.

    Learn more about the PS4

With more than 100 million units now sold, the PS4 is one of the most successful games platforms of all time – and with good reason. Huge exclusive titles, world-class third parties and an enormous player base mean it’s hard to go wrong when it comes to buying a PS4. Don’t be put off by the PS5 being just 12 months away – the PS4 has enough to keep you busy for years to come!

Two core versions – the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro

After a hugely successful run, the original PlayStation 4 console has now been phased out. In its place have come the PS4 Slim and the more advanced PS4 Pro. The Slim is identical to the original in many ways, but, as the name suggests, comes in a more streamlined package. The Pro improves on the Slim in terms of graphics and processing power, but tends to retail for between £70 and £100 more expensive. However, in November 2017, around a year after the Pro launched, there was a significant cut in price to the Pro, making it a viable alternative to the Slim for most. At certain times, there’s little to choose between the Pro and a 1TB Slim in terms of price.

You can read a full breakdown of what sets the PS4 Pro apart from the PS4 Slim in the section below this one.

100 million players can’t be wrong

If you’re looking for a testament to the PS4’s success at bringing together gamers of all types, look no further than the eye-watering sales record, which now stands at more than 100 million units sold worldwide. This number puts the PS4 behind only the PlayStation 2 in terms of the best-selling home consoles ever, more than the enormously successful Wii and original PlayStation. Are you ready to join them?

    The new PS4 Pro

    PS4 Dualshock 4 Controller

    The Dualshock 4 Controller

There’s no part of the PlayStation family that’s more iconic than the DualShock controller, which bears remarkable similarities to the controller that many players grasped upon their very first time playing on a PlayStation.  However, while the appearance may be roughly the same, the DualShock 4 v2 (replacing the v1, which still comes with original PS4 consoles), boasts several improvements under the hood.

A track pad, light bar for motion tracking and a share button for in-game streaming are just three of the innovations added to the controller that many consider to be perhaps the best ever – on any console.

A world class library of games

The PS4 has a good claim to have the best library of games ever assembled for a single console. Hugely successful exclusives such as Death Stranding, God of War, Spider-Man, and Horizon Zero Dawn are joined by massively popular multiplatform titles such as Fortnite, FIFA 20, Call of Duty Modern Warfare and many others. No matter if you want multiplayer mayhem or immersive single player adventures, the PS4 has enough to keep you busy for months on end.

The added benefits of buying a PS4 Pro

It’s becoming more and more common for manufacturers to launch alternate versions of each of their consoles in order to maximise their potential and help it appeal to casual and hardcore gamers alike. The PlayStation 4 is no exception. The Slim edition in an update on the original console, and is now the most commonly available version, coming in the majority of our bundles above.

However, if you’re someone who wants the most comprehensive PS4 experience possible, there is an alternative. 2016 saw the launch of the PS4 Pro, a significant upgrade on the original and Slim consoles.

We’ve included a full breakdown of the technical specifications that differ between the Pro and base models below, but the key differences are:

    Improved visuals

For most, the core added appeal of the PS4 Pro will come from the graphics. The classic and Slim PS4 models offer a maximum output of 1080p, while the Pro is capable of 4K ultra high definition gaming at 30 frames per second, or 1080p at 60 FPS. If you have a 4K TV, the PS4 Pro is truly a sight to behold.

    Better internals

To accompany the enhanced graphical capabilities of the system, the PS4 Pro comes with twice the processing power of the original PS4 with a AMD Radeon 4.2 TFLOPs to help keep framerates stable. All of this comes packaged within a system that, while bigger and heavier than the Slim, is still of a manageable enough size that should mean you’ll have no problems finding it a home.

    Enhanced gaming experience

While certain releases since the Pro’s launch, such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, have come with settings specifically designed to take advantage of the stronger graphical capabilities of the system, the Pro is also able to upscale older games to make them look better and play smoother even if they were released prior to the Pro.

    Non-gaming improvements

Both Sony and Microsoft have taken significant strides to make their current consoles not just gaming machines, but home entertainment centers. The Pro offers advantages in this regard too, with support for 4K streaming over online video on demand services such as Netflix and YouTube. Unfortunately, the integrated Blu Ray player doesn’t support Ultra HD.

    Choosing your PS4 bundle

At Console Deals, we compare hundreds of deals every single day, constantly finding new offers so that you always know you’re getting to see a huge selection of the best offers available. Using the above filters, which enable you to select bundles by included games, accessories, console model and more, you can quickly find the best price for what you’re looking for. However, if you need a hand picking the best bundle for you, we’re here to help.

What are the bundled games and accessories?

One of the most popular things our users want to know is what games and accessories come with a particular bundle. As the PS4 draws closer and closer to the end of its lifespan, retailers are offering better and better bundle deals, to the point where it’s rare that buying a console by itself is worth doing. Using our filters above, you can select exactly what you’re looking for to make sure you get a bundle that’s catered to you, whether that’s a particular game, a PSN subscription or an extra controller.

Which console model is right for you?

It’s now very hard to find new versions of the original ‘phat’ PS4, but you still have to make a choice between whether you pick up a Slim or a Pro console. The Pro offers more power, and really shows off a graphical improvement over the Slim on games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War. The Slim, however, is still a great piece of kit, and is generally around £100 cheaper (500GB Slim versus a 1TB Pro).

How much storage do you need?

Another thing to bear in mind is the storage of the console. All Pro consoles come with 1TB of storage, but if you’re looking at a Slim, you’ll have to choose between 500GB and 1TB options. 500GB consoles are, of course, quite a bit cheaper, but limit you more in terms of how many games you can store on them. What we’re now finding is that the price difference between Slim 1TB consoles and the Pro is growing increasingly negligible, so if you feel you’ll need 1TB, you may well be best off going for the Pro.

    Plan your bundle

As you’ll see above, we compare hundreds and hundreds of deals to find you the very best out there. However, in busy periods it can be easy to be blindsided by the number of deals and the speed with which they fly in and out of stock. That’s why we recommend knowing what sort of console, memory capacity, and bundled items you’d ideally like. That way, you can avoid the confusion and get a great deal on exactly what you want!
