Review Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
NOTICE: Activation key must be used on a valid Steam account. Requires internet connection.
From legendary Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi comes the series’ spiritual successor, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a Metroidvania-style side-scrolling action game centered on exploring your environments, and unlocking new abilities to allow you to enter previously closed-off areas.
You play as Miriam, an orphan in a 19th Century-inspired fantasy world. You were experimented on by the Alchemists’ Guild and transformed into a Shardbinder, with incredible powers but doomed to die a slow death as your body is slowly crystallized. You must battle through hordes of demons in a castle summoned by another Shardbinder, your old friend Gebel.
Shardbinder features a variety of deep action RPG systems. There are many unique shard skills, a responsive attack system with melee and ranged combos, a crafting system for new and powerful items, and powerups for temporary bonuses.
Each weapon is different and allows you to tailor the game to your playstyle. You can choose to use fast, close-range attacks with swords, or slow long-range spear attacks with massive damage. You can even equip bows to sacrifice melee combat but enable long-range engagements. All of these weapons can be swapped as you play.
The game world is large and features lots of exploration. Just like any Metroidvania game, Bloodstained locks many of these rooms behind keys and abilities, making it impossible to reach them in the early game. But as you acquire more abilities and keys, you can revisit past areas and open them up, expanding the game even further.
The game also features NPC shops, save rooms, and upgrade areas.
