Trine is a series of side-scrolling action platform-puzzle games which tasks players to hone the skills of three unique characters in order to progress. One player can either switch back-and-forth between them or three players can take control of one each for some magical co-op fun. Pontius the knight, Zoya the thief, and Amadeus the wizard all return for Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince.

Trine 4 returns the cult classic series back to its roots, doing away with the full 3D environments of Trine 3 and instead transporting it back to a charming 2.5D plane. Some of the game’s puzzles will have different solutions depending on whether you play alone or solo, rendering Trine 4 a totally different experience with friends.

    Three-player co-operative fun in a magic-filled world

While two-player games are still commonplace on pretty much all the three major platforms, those that allow you to jump in and play as a trio are rare. The Trine series, however, is one that continues to keep this flame alive, with Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince featuring three central characters that each boast their unique powers useful for pushing forward. It’s the only way to defeat the Nightmare Prince’s shadows.

    A return to traditional Trine

Trine 4 returns the side-scrolling adventuring back to a 2.5 format, depicting levels beautifully between such locations as decimated ruins to tranquil birch groves. This hasn’t stopped Trine 4 from giving the combat mechanics a complete overhaul, however, with featured boss fights and enemy types that now require flexible tactics.

Adaptive puzzles that change depending on player count

Trine 4’s environmental challenges are dynamic in that they are tailored to the number of players taking part. Reaching a high area with two others might suddenly be more involved than it would be if you were going it alone. This helps keep Trine 4 a fresh experience to come back to every time you return for it, adding more puzzle-solving bang for your buck.
