This year marks the 35th anniversary for Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series. To celebrate this bold feat, one of the franchise’s most underappreciated entries is making its way to Nintendo Switch in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD. Featuring a faster framerate, improved visuals and an all-new control set-up that doesn’t require motion, it’s an entirely new way to play one of Link’s most colourful adventures.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will release this Summer, sure to delight both returning players and Nintendo fans that missed it the first time around on the Wii. It tells a story that covers the origins of the Master Sword, sitting very early on within the wider Zelda timeline. This was the last home console series entry prior to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it is by far a more traditional dungeon-exploration adventure by comparison.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is new and improved for Nintendo Switch

The original version of Skyward Sword originally released for the Nintendo Wii and as such was primarily played using motion controls. This HD version maintains this thanks to the capabilities of the Joy-Con. Now, however, a new all-button control method has been implemented for use in TV and Handheld mode. Nintendo has been careful to let both new and old players experience this classic Zelda adventure in whatever way they want.

Witness the origins of the Master Sword

Skyward Sword sitting so early in the Zelda timeline means that players will experience many “firsts” if jumping in for the first time. The Master Sword’s mysterious origins, for example, will be revealed, as will the kindling of a friendship between Link and Zelda that would go on to span numerous future entries.

A puzzle-filled journey amongst the clouds

Link’s search for his childhood friend will see him travel skywards, travelling to various cloud-based locations. This you do with the aid of your trusty companion Loftwing, who is a huge red bird that is able to soar through the skies. The sky-based setting gives Skyward Sword HD a noticeably lighter feel than, say, Twilight Princess before it, full of fun puzzles and dungeons to overcome.
