Capcom’s iconic survival horror franchise makes its grand return in 2021, challenging players on PS4, PS5, PC and Xbox to fight for their lives in an all-new location. You once again take on the role of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard protagonist Ethan Winters, who is in search of his missing daughter that has something to do with series mainstay Chris Redfield. Only by heading directly into hell does Ethan stand a chance at reuniting his family.

This eighth mainline entry returns to the gameplay to a claustrophobic first-person view, doing better to set in the effective scares as you come up against, zombies, vampires and even werewolves this time around. Getting at the heart of this mystery involves exploring the new village setting and its accompanying castle, which, when taken together, evokes the look and feel of classic Resident Evil titles.

Explore scary sights in Resident Evil Village on PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox

Resident Evil Village is set to release on current-gen consoles as well as previous platforms, giving all survival horror fans the ability to easily get their next fix. The new game might look best on the likes of PS5 and Xbox Series X, yet Resident Evil Village promises to be scary on other platforms too. Ultra-realistic facial animations and graphics are made possible with the RE Engine, bringing this gory world to life.

Ethan’s journey will see him explore the innards of an Eastern European castle and its accompanying village, forced to navigate a community that’s suffering from the reign of Lady Dimitrescu. Thankfully, new gameplay additions like being able to lay down traps should make going up against vampires, lycans and zombies alike more manageable than ever before. All of these various enemies will still put up a fight, but players always stand a chance at surviving this horror however helpless they feel.

Redefined Resident Evil combat

Village returns the combat to a first-person view but makes some slight new additions. You’ll still be making the most of purposefully awkward gunplay when your back is against the wall, though the block system now lets you guard against enemy attacks and sees you take reduced damage. Guarding successfully will also let you kick enemies back, then unleash an onslaught if you wish.

Resident Evil Village The Duke

Know how to manage your limited resources

A staple of the series is resource management, where you must keep track of your healing items and weapons and keep track of when to use them. Village emphasises this survival horror aspect more than ever, though now you’ll be able to barter and trade with The Duke, a new Merchant-like character that will sell you useful goodies and let you upgrade Ethan’s abilities.
