Pokémon Shield is one of two games coming to the Nintendo Switch on November 15th, both being the first fully fledged Pokémon games to release on the new hybrid console. It sets you off in the new UK-inspired region of Galar, where you are once again tasked with battling, exploring and living amongst a world full of catchable creatures to become the very best Pokémon trainer.

Pokémon Shield (and its sister title Pokémon Sword) offers up a a whole new host of various features and subtle improvements that makes it the ideal game for veteran players and newcomers alike. Just one example of this are the new legendary Pokémon, which for Shield is the Wolf-type Pokémon known as Zamazenta. Have you got what it takes to catch them all?

Dive into the new Galar region and discover what awaits you on Nintendo Switch

Whether you’re a Pokémon fan from way back or someone jumping in for the first time then Pokémon Shield will be instantly appealing. The new Galar region is world full of familiar UK-inspired locations and beautiful sights to see, all of which are inhabited by a new swathe of Pokémon that have never been seen before. This is the first full-3D Pokémon game that lets you control the camera, letting you see it all using your own guided perspective.

Grass, Fire or Water-type starter Pokémon?

It wouldn’t be a Pokémon without three types of starter Pokémon to choose from: Grass, Fire and Water. That’s why Pokémon Shield offers up three new cute little critters to select as your first friend in Grookey the chimp (Grass), Scorbunny (Fire) and Sobble (Water). All feature their own unique evolution cycles that makes battling with them exciting and an event worth looking forward to.

Out with Mega Evolutions, in with Gigantamax

Previous Pokémon games introduced the concept of Mega Evolutions, where once per battle certain Pokémon could boost their power by transforming into their Mega form. Pokémon Shield, however, does away with this idea, replacing it with the Gigantamax system that sees every Pokémon able to turn huge for three turns. You’ll go up against Gigantamax-sized Pokémon as part of gym battles as well as use your own – be prepared for a new kind of Pokémon battle.

A new explorable region that’s unabashedly British

Much like how Pokémon Sun and Moon based its region on the sunny heights of Hawaii, Pokémon Shield’s setting takes its aesthetic cue from Great Britain. This means that certain areas have a notably rustic and rural feel, while others will see you enter towns inspired heavily by Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The Galar region is like nothing witnessed in a Pokémon game before, even influencing new types of creature evolutions.

Look after your Pokémon party in wild area camps

Battling your Pokémon is the main thrust of Pokémon Shield as always, but those who want to get closer to their party and improve their team’s stats can set up what’s called a Pokémon Camp. Here you can cook, feed and play with your current line-up, building up the bond between you and them to improve battle stats. You’ll come across other players’ camps in wild areas of the region, letting you see the teams of folks nearby.
