2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the wildly successful Pokémon franchise, and Nintendo will be celebrating the feat in various ways. One of the most notable are the ground-up remakes of Pokémon’s fourth generation: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. As is usually the case both games play near identically to one another, with the only real exception being that a few collectible critters remain exclusive to either version.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond fully takes advantage of the Nintendo Switch hardware, overhauling the original Nintendo DS’ games pixelated graphics into a more modern, chibi aesthetic. Developers ILCA and Game Freak have been careful to maintain the essence of the classic game, though, largely keeping the familiar story, world and characters all intact. It’s the perfect entry point for both newcomers and Pokemon Diamond veterans.

Return to the Sinnoh region in full HD in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond for Nintendo Switch

The Sinnoh region has never looked better than in this fully remade version on the Nintendo Switch. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond doesn’t strictly lift the art style directly from Sword and Shield but it does take inspiration from it, merging its full 3D character models with the chibi and cute style people already familiar with Pokémon Diamond will likely expect. The result is that classic locations look recognisable yet still new, and a lot of fun to explore all over again.

Celebrate Pokémon’s 25th anniversary in this faithful diamond reimagining

The Nintendo DS original first released in 2006, casting players as a plucky young trailer that must “catch em all” to become the best that ever was. Now is the perfect time to do so due to 2021 being Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond is, in fact, one small part of the ongoing celebrations. If you missed either Diamond or Pearl the first time around, experience it with a fresh coat of HD paint 15 years later.

The latest in a long line of Pokémon remake projects

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl continue he remake trend set down by the Pokémon Company ever since Fire Red and Leaf Green released on the Game Boy Advance. Fans of this series make no bones about how much they enjoy this nostalgia, so these remakes make them instantly more accessible to a wider audience.
