Serving as a more polished version of the 2019 action hit with added bells and whistles, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S at launch to let next-gen players experience this newest stylistic instalment in Capcom’s classic series. It’s the same game in one neat and souped-up package, taking place immediately after the events of Devil May Cry 4 to tell a story involving Dante, Nero and new playable character V.
The original version of Devil May Cry 5 was lauded for its stylish action and bombastic gameplay when it released, letting players fully fulfil the fantasy of being an ultimate demon slayer. This special edition is exclusive to next-gen consoles, offering two options: 4K visuals at 30fps or 1080p visuals at 60fps. You have the choice to either prioritise graphics or framerate.
Devil May Cry 5 was already a good-looking game, but in this new version players will be able to witness the high-flying hack-and-slash action with added ray-tracing technology. This makes for more realistic lighting and shadows, resulting in some truly dynamic reflections that should really pop for anyone with a 4K-equipped display. Plus, a new difficulty setting enters the fold for veteran players craving added challenge.
Devil May Cry 5 saw you play as a trio of heroes before, but now longstanding and fan-favourite character Vergil is finally playable in this special edition. He comes with most of his combat abilities from DMC4 included, but here there’s even more interesting twists provided with how he will handle. Vergil adds a new dimension to Devil May Cry 5’s combat, and it’s exclusive to next-gen consoles.
Partially inspired by the one featured in Street Fighter 2 Turbo, this special edition of Devil May Cry 5 features its own Turbo Mode that enables players to fight at 1.2x speed. Capcom is on record as stating that they initially intended to set it higher but found that this was the perfect sweet spot. Sure to be a hit with DMC speedrunners, Turbo Mode makes the fast action even faster.
