Infinity Ward changed the landscape of modern first-person shooting games forever when it released 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Not only did it bring the classic military series up to date by transporting players into the 21st century warzone, but its emphasis on tight shooting mechanics, unprecedented Triple-A polish and revolutionary multiplayer ensured that no shooter after it would ever be the same. 2019 sees the classic sub-series of Modern Warfare return for the first time since 2011, using familiar faces with which to shake up the genre all over again.

2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is what’s considered a ‘Soft Reboot’ of the franchise, combining classic elements with fresh mechanics to create a new breed of first-person shooter. This means a heavy focus on a Hollywood style campaign full of blockbuster spectacle as well as in-depth multiplayer that will likely have you and friends playing until the early hours of the morning.

Modern Warfare gets reinvented for PS4 and Xbox One

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does away with the WWII sensibilities of, say, World at War and the space shooting action of other sub-series like Infinite Warfare and Advanced Warfare to strip the shooting back to basics. It casts you as various soldiers across a range of varied and engaging single-player missions, where you once again find yourself working under the tutelage of the legendary Captain Price.

This isn’t the same Call of Duty: Modern Warfare you know, however, but rather a totally new interpretation featuring some familiar elements and characters. A lot has changed since 2007, and this is a new Call of Duty to reflect how the very idea of ‘Modern Warfare’ has evolved over 13 years. Featuring all-new weapons and a fresh take on global conflict, this is a 21st century first-person shooter perfectly capable of accommodating your single-player and multiplayer tastes.

Featuring the long-awaited return of Spec Ops

Modern Warfare 2019 is the first game since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts to not feature a zombies co-op mode, instead offering up a new spin on the two-player set up of Spec Ops. It’s been a sorely missed staple of the series for a while now, so it makes sense to see it return. Spec Ops will let you and a buddy squad up to take on a series of challenge-focussed missions, testing your ability to communicate and work fast with one another across bite-sized slices of the main campaign.

Confirmed cross-platform multiplayer

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer is entirely cross-platform, meaning that those playing on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 4 can play with one another should they choose to do so. This saves each respective platform time searching for players, instead having the base shared across consoles and PC. Season Passes also aren’t a thing in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – there are instead a slew of regular free updates.

Captain Price is back on the front line

Originally voiced by British gangster actor Bill Murray, Captain Price quickly became a fan-favourite character as the storied sergeant in charge. From the initial Wetwork mission featured in the first game all the way up to Modern Warfare 3’s bombastic finale, the moustachioued war hero always had your back. Captain Price returns for this new iteration of Modern Warfare, this time borrowing the voice and likeness of Barry Sloane. Strap in for this up-to-date army veteran.

The ultimate online multiplayer playground

While Spec Ops makes it long-awaited return to Call of Duty, so does Modern Warfare’s brand of action-packed PVP multiplayer modes – offering classic killstreaks, plenty of gun customisation and the very best barrel-down gunplay seen in an FPS. What’s more, some of the largest maps to ever appear in Call of Duty have been created for this release, upping the scale to make players feel like they’re in the midst of all out modern warfare.
