Ubisoft reaffirms that next-gen upgrades for Far Cry 6 will be free on Xbox and PlayStation

We can’t seem to get through a single week without acknowledging a single controversy around next-gen upgrade paths. Most recently PlayStation came under fire over its Horizon Forbidden West policy (before backtracking), which may have inspired Ubisoft to re-establish its stance on the matter with regards to the upcoming Far Cry 6.

The game’s official Twitter account simply made it clear that players who buy Far Cry 6 on either PS4 or Xbox One will receive a FREE upgrade when or should they upgrade to PS5 or Xbox Series, respectively. “No additional cost”, was the specific phrased used, highlighting Ubisoft’s continued open policy with regards to next-gen. This falls in line with how the publisher handled upgrade paths for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion and Immortals: Fenyx Rising last year.

Such a pro-consumer policy is in stark contrast to how PlayStation continues to handle the matter. Sure, it’s plan to previously limit PS4-to-PS5 upgrades for Horizon Forbidden West as free to players who bought either the Collector’s and Regalla edition may have since been nixed, but it did lay out in a recent blog that future first-party upgrades will cost players £10. This policy is set to apply to upcoming PlayStation exclusives like God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7.

Ubisoft’s tact is much more in line with Microsoft’s policy, whose Xbox “Smart Delivery” program automatically detects the console you’re using and ensures you play the best version of any game. This feature was famously touted as just another thing to put on the back of the box before, but the confusion around how other publisher’s handle the process has since made it a godsend.

Far Cry 6 is set to release on all major console platforms this October 7th. Now that the free upgrade path for players has been reaffirmed by Ubisoft, it might be worth PS5 players picking up the PS4 version if it’s cheaper. Find out below:
