The PlayStation 5 has already sold more than PS Vita, Nintendo Wii U and Sega Dreamcast in the UK

Most of the time it’s hard to get a solid read on just how well the PS5 is performing sales-wise due to units constantly being out of stock. According to Gameindustry.biz’s Christopher Dring, however, that hasn’t stopped the next-gen console from blazing past another impressive sales milestone. He recently took to Twitter to let people know that the PS5 has already outsold the Nintendo Wii U, Sega Dreamcast and Sony’s own PlayStation Vita’s lifetime sales here in the UK, indicating an extremely successful sell-through period for the console in its first five months on the market.

True, all three of the other consoles mentioned weren’t particularly known for being smash successes, but this feat is still impressive for a next-gen platform that is still suffering from unprecedent supply constraints. Demand from British gamers shows absolutely no sign of slowing down, either, as PS5 stock still tends to disappear within a matter of minutes whenever they do briefly become available. Console Deals readers know a little something about that.

Sony hasn’t been too forthcoming with the exact number of PS5 units its sold since the November launch last year, but according to the latest VGChartz estimates its somewhere in the region of 6.8 million. This figure takes into account global sales, as well as those made in the United Kingdom. We imagine this number will only continue to increase by the time the market finally evens out and PlayStation 5 units become more widely available to the average consumer.

To put things into perspective, the Nintendo Wii U stayed in production for five years from November 2012 to January 2017 (two months before the Nintendo Switch was released). The PlayStation Vita, meanwhile, was produced for eight years between 2011 and 2019, while the Sega Dreamcast stayed on the market only managed a measly three years after its 1998 debut. In just five short months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold all of those in the UK even with the trials of an ongoing pandemic.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any other interesting facts about the PlayStation 5’s sales, and also those related to the Xbox Series X. Needless to say, though, the big wigs over at Sony HQ must be pretty happy right now.
