Entering the year’s spookiest season, we’re definitely in the midst of what promises to be an exciting time to be a gamer. Watch Dogs: Legion arrives at the end of the month to let us hack our way through a futuristic London, Little Hope and Remothered: Broken Porcelain release to set in some horror chills, but before any of that the following month’s Games with Gold and PS Plus games have been revealed. And just as you’d expect, there’s a wide gamut of different genres available to subscribers.

Games with Gold for October 2020

Games with Gold is known for delving into the depths of Xbox history as well as gifting players with a deluge of fresh releases. And as you’d expect, October’s selection doesn’t disappoint – there’s even a horror theme to ensure a frightful time for everyone. It all kicks off on October 1st when indie slasher Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut arrives, but also landing that day is classic 3D platformer Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Then, two weeks later on October 16th, Maid of Sker is a first-person survival horror available to download for Xbox One. Finally, Xbox 360 classic Costume Quest (also playable on Xbox One) arrives on October 16th as a Halloween treat.

Here’s a brief breakdown of every Games with Gold title arriving in October:

Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut: Ideal for gamers that want to indulge in spooky vibes without things getting too graphic, Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut is a puzzle game where you play a serial killer that must move around isometric rooms taking down innocent teams. It’s a cutesy homage to classic 80s horror flicks, setting you in the shoes of a customisable murderer who must think his killer strategy through. There are multiple puzzles and unlockable costumes to seek out, so Games with Gold members should look forward to it on October 1st.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy: While most players likely think of Mario or even Crash Bandicoot when it comes to classic 3D platformers, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy was a lesser-known take on the concept set in a unique Egyptian setting. You play as a young warrior tasked with tracking down the legendary blade of Osiris, partnering up with former pharaoh Imhotep to get the job done. While by no means revolutionary, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is a good time while it lasts and is a good get for Games with Gold members. Play it also on October 1st.

Maid of Sker: The second free Xbox One game for the month of October is first-person survival horror adventure Maid of Sker. Heavily inspired by chilling tales established as part of Welsh folklore, you must traverse a remote hotel during the late 1800s in a bid to overcome evil threats. You play as Elisabeth Williams, who quickly becomes wrapped up in a supernatural mystery that she can’t escape until solved. Available to Games with Gold members from October 16th, it’ promises to be a guaranteed scary time this Halloween.

Costume Quest: Sitting on the more family-friendly side of Halloween treats, Costume Quest is a turn-based adventure in which two friends must fend off ghosts and ghoulies while out trick or treating. You’ll be collecting super-powered costumes that imbue you with different abilities, levelling up your hero so that you can take down evil in this charming Halloween tale. Look forward to downloading Costume Quest on October 16th.

PS Plus Games for October 2020

PlayStation don’t seem to be phased by the onset of Halloween this October, opting to give us one spooky-themed game for PS Plus rather than two. Both Vampyr and Need for Speed: Payback will be available for PS Plus members from October 6th, giving us plenty to sink our teeth into in the lead up to the Winter months.

Here’s a brief breakdown of both PS Plus titles arriving in October:

Vampyr: Developed by the folks over at Focus Home Interactive, Vampyr is a third-person action RPG that sets you in the shoes of a vampiric doctor who must navigate Victorian London choosing to indulge in his villainous urges or indulge in them. Whichever path you choose will directly affect how the residents of the city react to you. Will you elect to become as evil as possible and give in to your instincts or do the good thing and try to hold yourself back? Find out when Vampyr hits PS Plus this October.

Need for Speed Payback: One of the better-received entries in EA’s hallmark street racing series, Need for Speed Payback sets you off in the sprawling open-world setting of Fortune Valley in a range of high-performance vehicles. With 64 total cars from the likes of Toyota, Scion and Ferrari, you’ll experience action driving both in the offline single-player or while racing alongside friends in the online multiplayer. Put pedal to the medal when Need for Speed Payback is free for subscribers from October 6th.
