After a long period of testing for select beta players, Microsoft has officially renamed its streaming-based game subscription service from Project xCloud to Cloud Streaming. It will launch on Android devices is 22 countries from tomorrow onwards, featuring a whopping 150+ titles to instantly jump into including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Gears 5.
Cloud Gaming will be immediately accessible to anyone with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which makes sense considering that it pulls from the same library of titles as its wildly popular ‘Netflix for games’ service. The only difference now is that you don’t necessarily need an Xbox console or a PC to play. Instead, the power of Cloud Gaming will see major Triple-A titles playable on your smartphone with minimal lag.
Of course, Cloud Gaming isn’t expected to arrive any time soon for iOS players, as Microsoft is still yet to negotiate an agreed-upon deal with Apple following Epic Game Store’s controversial #FreeFortnite internet movement. The Android marketplace being a much more open platform now works in its favour in this instance, as Cloud Gaming will be readily available.
It’s worth noting that while all Cloud Gaming titles are technically playable on your Android device, players that are able to hook up their Xbox One controller via Bluetooth will likely have the best experience. Select games like Minecraft Dungeons will boast optimised controls for touch screens on day one, but the majority will still feature those familiar Xbox button prompts.
