2018 was a stonking year for games - some might argue one of the best ever, what with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Red Dead Redemption 2 in town. 2019 may not have quite as many eye-catching major titles yet, but there’s plenty to be excited about. We reckon the following exciting upcoming games will be a big deal this year.

Anthem

BioWare’s hotly anticipated action-RPG Anthem is nearly upon us. The story is a closely guarded secret, but what we do know is it’s set on an abandoned world where the previous inhabitants left behind godlike technology. You are suited up in a javelin exosuit, allowing you to move at incredible speed, rocket through the sky and fight your powerful enemies. If you like sci-fi and action-RPGs, Anthem is for you.

Days Gone

Days Gone is a post-apocalyptic zombie-fest. The world is overrun with infected which group up in hordes and can run faster than you. To survive, you must plan every single move you make and use your environment to quell the hundreds and thousands of ‘freakers’ barrelling down on you. The freaker mechanics are out of this world - they’re similar to the Jerusalem scene in World War Z when the zombies scale the wall.

The Division 2

The Division 2 is a sequel to the first game. You’re a member of the Division, an elite group of civilian agents. The game is set in Washington D.C. and the realism is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The city is mapped to a 1:1 representation, putting every single neighbourhood and landmark on the map. Your mission? To save the city from hostiles who want it for themselves. Gear up and suit up, it’s going to get messy.

Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing is set to be one of the biggest Switch games of 2019. It’s as yet untitled and we know little about it, although we expect it to be very similar to previous games in the franchise with no few objectives - just restful, open play. It is a main entry to the series. The last one was New Leaf in 2013 which brought with it huge changes to open play. We suspect the new game will be just as addictive as New Leaf.

Pokémon

Last year's Pokémon Let's Go titles went down well, but hardcore fans are still clamouring for a new entry in the series, rather than a remake. A new RPG game is due out in 2019 and Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara says it’ll be a completely different game to Pokémon Let's Go. We suspect it might be very similar to the DS games in play, only much better looking. It won’t be coming until later in the year and despite some rumours suggesting it’ll be a spin off to Sun and Moon, it seems more likely we'll be getting something entirely new.

Crash Team Racing Nitro

Crash Team Racing is back! Available from June 21, it’s a remastered version of the original 1999 game on PlayStation. Power slide to glory and use an arsenal of weapons (collected by driving through boxes) to gain places. It’s set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch with a new online mode. All the best karts from Crash Nitro Kart are being carried over too. Nostalgia doesn’t get more intense than this.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Ori and the Blind Forest (2015) was a fantastic game on Xbox One and the new game looks absolutely incredible with beautiful art and mechanics. In this game, you unravel Ori’s true destiny in a world of neon and magic. The vast world is filled with enemies, allies and interactive elements. A new combat system gives you dozens of weapons, spells and skills, and there’s a new shard system to power up Ori’s capabilities.

Other upcoming games

We have Mortal Kombat II, Resident Evil 2, Kingdom Hearts III, Far Cry New Dawn, Crackdown 3, Metro Exodus, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Gears 5 to look forward to.
