Christmas is literally days away, it’s rainy and cold outside, and you’re finally getting some me time. In other words, it’s the perfect time for gaming.
Christmas is also a time for shiny new things – whether you buy them for yourself, receive them as a present or buy them for someone else. But which gaming items are going to make your 2015 festive season most memorable and exciting?
Here we run down our picks for the best, absolute, must-have gaming items this Christmas.
Must-have action game: Star Wars Battlefront (PS4, XBO, PC)
Simple enough for the whole family to enjoy, so visually stunning it’ll wow your mum, and just in time for the release of The Force Awakens, Star Wars Battlefront is going to make a lot of people happy this Christmas. It’s rated 16+, but it’s still probably more suitable for kids than Call of Duty.
Honourable mentions: If you prefer FPS action with a bit more depth, then COD, Halo 5 or Destiny are good picks also. Metal Gear Solid 5 is out too. But you already knew that.
Must-have sports game: FIFA 2016 (PS4, XBO, PC, PS3, 360)
If you’re a gamer in Britain at Christmas, it has to be local FIFA multiplayer with your siblings, cousins, parents and even grandparents. So many memories. So many jammy goals. It helps that this year’s version has reviewed well, and it introduces women’s teams for the first time.
Honourable mention: Of course you might prefer PES 2016 or another sport entirely, in which case… go for that instead!
Must-have racing game: FAST Racing NEO (Wii U)
This might be controversial, and it might look like we just wanted to include Wii U (uhm…), but FAST Racing NEO really does look stunning. It’s out December 10th on the Nintendo eShop for only £10.99, and it’s insanely… FAST!
Honourable mentions: Driveclub on PS4 keeps getting better, and Forza 6 on Xbox One is a solid choice too.
Must-have kids’ game: Lego Dimensions (PS4, XBO, Wii U, PS3, 360)
The toys-to-life genre is pretty intense at the moment – your kids may already love Skylanders and Disney Infinity. But Lego Dimensions is… well, it’s Lego isn’t it? With an amazing cast of characters, and The Guardian calling it “the best Lego game yet,” Lego Dimensions might just be the new king of toys-to-life come Boxing Day.
Honourable mentions: Skylanders Superchargers, Disney Infinity 3.0
Must-have PS4 exclusive: Bloodborne
It’s been out for a while, but there’s no doubt Bloodborne is 2015’s biggest and best PS4 exclusive. It’s not for everyone: it’s tough as nails, creepy as hell and likely to scar your little nephew for life if you play it in the living room on Christmas Day. But if you want some real hardcore gaming time this season, Bloodborne is the go-to choice.
Must-have Xbox One exclusive: Halo 5 Guardians
Halo’s back, and by all accounts it’s 343 Industries’ best stab at the series yet. There are loads of new weapons, online modes and maps – enough to make Halo feel fresh again, rather than a re-tread. Graphically it’s obviously a major step-up for the series too, being the first Halo on Xbox One. No local multiplayer is a sore point at Christmas, but you still need this in your life.
Must-have Wii U exclusive: Splatoon
The year’s best Wii U game is Splatoon, hands down. It’s a team shooter deep enough for competitive players, and friendly enough for kids to play at Christmas. It’s also one of the most original takes on an online shooter in years. Love that funky music too!
Must-have 3DS game: Legend of Zelda Tri-Force Heroes
If your Christmas is all about getting together and having fun, Tri-Force Heroes is a great pick. It’s the first Zelda game with online co-op, so you and two friends can take finally take on those dungeons and puzzles together. If your kids each have their own 3DS systems, they only need one copy of the game to play together over Wi-Fi. Value!
Must-Have amiibo: Mega Yarn Yoshi
Those dinky little Nintendo amiibo figures keep coming… and going. You usually need to buy these things fast before they first disappear, then skyrocket in price. Animal Crossing fans may want the Reese/KK Slider/Cyrus three-pack – but the accompanying Wii U game; amiibo Festival, is a stinker. So our pick has to be the giant woolly Yarn Yoshi. So cute!
What’s on your 2015 Christmas gaming list?
Those are our picks. But have we got it wrong? You tell us? What are your must-have gaming items this Christmas? What are you looking forward to the most? Oh, and Merry Christmas!!!!
