PS3 Bundles Information

After the enormous success of the PlayStation 2 expectations for Sony's next console was sky high. The PlayStation 3 did not disappoint. The PS3 deals out incredible high definition graphics and crisp, life like sounds via its HDMI input, it truly is a gamers dream.

The Sony PS3 Slim console

The PS3 is the first console to feature a Blu-Ray player that plays back in both standard and high definition 1080p. The current model is the PS3 Slim much smaller than the original version but still packs that power punch, it features 2 x front USB ports, 1 x HDMI output, 1 x optical audio output, built in Wifi and Blu-ray player as standard, but there are tons of brilliant PS3 Deals out there so let us help you find one!

The console comes in 4 flavours, with a choice of 160GB or 320GB in the PlayStation 3 Slim, and 500GB or 12GB flash memory in the Playstation 3 Super Slim, it's important to think about if you will be using the console to store games, music and movies as if you think you are we would recommend the 500GB over the 320GB as the price difference is not that big! If you do have your own external USB storage device however, the 12GB flash memory version packs some serious punch and is greate value for money.

PS3 - Whats in the Box?

In the basic PS3 Bundle you get everything you need for initial set up: A PS3 Console, Dual Shock 3 Controller, USB Charger Cable, AC Power Cord, Composite AV Cable and Specified Harddrive size. Remember you don't get the HDMI cable needed to play games in 1080p resolution! Retailers often like to throw in PS3 deals that include the HDMI cables.

PlayStation 3 Network

The PlayStation network is the online hub of Sony's console and it is full of movies, music, trailers, games and demos all available for direct download to store on the PS3 HDD. You can also play hundreds of multiplayer games with other gamers from all over the world using the online service and best of all it requires no monthly subscription! With full access to all your multiplayer gaming and the PlayStation store where you buy new games or download demos for free.

PlayStation Plus

Sony do offer a premium subscription service that will enhance the users experience on the PlayStation network, with special features such as early and exclusive access to some game betas, demos, premium downloadable content and many PlayStation Store items often free games!

Sony's PlayStation Plus

The first version of the PS3 received a lot of bad press; the initial price of the console was much higher than consumers anticipated. Forced up by the costly Blu-ray player (a standalone one back at launch was around £250!) the PS3 price at launch was a whopping £425! Costing far too much for the average gamer to afford.

The PS3 Slim arrived to drop the price to a much for affordable £299 and has continued to drop ever since, offering bundles for under £200 - almost unheard of a few years ago.

When Sony launched the PS3 Super Slim on September 28th, 2012, the PlayStation 3 became even greater value for money. Due to the reduced manufacturing costs, bundles for the console were able to offer higher processing power, a smaller device alongside A class games at launch for just over £210 - a record low for the Japanese electronics giant.

PlayStation 3 Timeline

PlayStation 3 Launch Day

On March 23rd 2007 Sony launched the PlayStation 3 in Europe, available as only a 60GB model. The console had already been out 4 months in the US and Japan who also received a 20GB model which was discontinued in April 2007. Later in the year a 40GB model was released with a reduced price tag.

More GB please Nathan Drake!

In 2008 the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 Models were discontinued and Sony announced the release of a 160GB PS3 Bundle that included Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and a DualShock 3 controller which replaced the rumble-less six axis controller. Little did they know that Uncharted would become one of the most iconic franchises on the PlayStation 3.

Slimming Down

There's no denying that the PS3 consoles were abnormally large and Sony addressed the problem with the release of a slimmed down version simply called PS3 Slim. The PS3 slim would be available in 120GB and was exactly 32% smaller, 36% lighter and 34% more energy efficient. Sony launched the console worldwide in September at a reduced price of £249, the best PS3 deal available at the time.

Move, 50 Million PSN Users

PlayStation Move was Sony's answer to Nintendo Wii’s motion enabled games, whilst having nowhere near the same success as the Wii the PlayStation move is very impressive and has the most precise motion sensors available on any of the home consoles. PlayStation Network reached over 50 million users worldwide.

PSN Hack and Uncharted 3

PlayStation Network was targeted by a group of hack known as anonymous who stole personal user data and led to the shutting down of the entire PlayStation Network by Sony. The PSN wasn’t put back live until around a month after the breach was announced. Uncharted 3 was the 3rd in the Naughty Dog series and won plenty of awards like always.

Year of Games

This year the PlayStation 3 has seen some absolutely stunning games and there are still plenty more on the way, from Tomb Raider, God of War, Assassins Creed, The Last of US and Sony’s own super smash bros, PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale. We also have had a limited edition red ps3 console.

Slimming Down Again

On September 18th, 2012, Sony unveiled their latest revision to the PlayStation 3 console - The Super Slim which was half the size of the original PlayStation 3 released in 2007. The UK saw 2 new models of the smaller form-factor device; a massive 500GB edition and for the first time, a 12GB flash drive edition which supported expandable memory.

Sony was playing the long game and making a big loss on each console sale in the early days, in order to establish a user base. It’s still something of a bargain now when you consider the tech inside: media streamer, hard drive and a Blu-ray player.
