The Sony PS3 Slim console

PlayStation 3 has been around a while, and it’s got a hell of a lot to offer. With nearly 10 years’ worth of brilliant games and a full suite of HD catch-up TV apps, it’s a fun and affordable box for the living room. You can even play online on PS3 without a subscription.

Picking your perfect PS3 bundle is all about storage size and pack-in games. If you want to take advantage of PlayStation Network’s (PSN’s) amazing “flash sales” on download games, you’re going to want a PS3 with a 500GB hard disk. Otherwise you could go for the cheaper 12GB version, with or without a free game. Here’s our full PS3 deal guide.

The Super Slim is here to stay

PS3 has been through a lot of revisions since 2006. Now the console has been superseded by PS4, it’s unlikely Sony will change the design again. So if you get the current PS3 Super Slim, you’re getting the smallest, quietest and most reliable PS3 console that will ever be made. Don’t forget to thank the 80 million other PS3 owners for testing it out for you!

500GB or 12GB models

There are two PS3 Super Slim models available at the moment: one with 500GB of storage and another with 12GB. If you want to save money, you can get the 12GB model and maybe upgrade the hard disk later (it’s not that hard to do). But if you pick the 500GB model, you really are getting fantastic value and a great amount of storage. After all, that’s the same hard disk size as the launch PS4!

Choose your bundled game

There are lots of PS3 bundles with lots of different games packed in, from Destiny to Minecraft. These bundles change often, so check our deal comparison above.

Learn more about PlayStation 3

It had a rocky start thanks to its expensive launch price. But PlayStation 3 has continued to add great games and new features, evolving into one of the most-loved and best-selling consoles of all time. Today PS3 has almost a decade’s worth of classic titles, rock-solid online features and great entertainment apps.

What’s in the box?

With either a 500GB or 12GB PS3 Super Slim you’ll get the console, a DualShock 3 controller, a USB controller charging cable, a PS3 power adapter and an AV cable.

Watch HD Blu-Ray movies

With its Wi-Fi connectivity, PS3 has always had one of the most advanced Blu-Ray players around. Why have two separate boxes for games and movies, when you can have PS3?

Instant game collection with PS Plus

Sony's PlayStation Plus

It’s free to play online with PS3 and the PlayStation Network. But if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you’ll also get new games to add to your “Instant Game Collection” every month. These aren’t bargain bucket rubbish either – AAA games, like Tomb Raider and Batman: Arkham City, often feature. You keep the games for as long as you keep your PS Plus subscription.

Every TV app you could want

BBC iPlayer, Sky TV, YouTube, Channel 4, Spotify… the list goes on. PS3 is as great an entertainment hub as it is a games console.

PlayStation 3 Timeline

PlayStation 3 revealed

Sony unveils the new PS3 console at their E3 conference in June, alongside a boomerang-shaped controller that never saw the light of day. A Final Fantasy VII PS3 tech demo hints at a remake that still hasn’t happened. An early look at Metal Gear Solid 4 shows off the power of PS3.

PS3 launch delayed

PS3’s planned November 2006 UK launch is delayed by supply issues. The console is released in Japan and the US, where demand was high. Some American launch-night campers were robbed of their shiny new PS3s at gunpoint!

UK welcomes PS3

PlayStation 3 is finally released in UK shops, with a 60GB hard disk and a whopping £425 price tag. A cheaper 40GB model is released later in the year.

Entering Uncharted territory

Alongside the launch of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Sony releases a new PS3 bundle that includes the game, a 160GB console and the new DualShock 3 controller (now with rumble!). Uncharted would go on to become, arguably, PS3’s most important franchise.

PS3 goes slim

In response to Yellow Light of Death issues, as well as the fact that the original PS3 models were giant, noisy beasts, Sony launches a new PlayStation 3 Slim console. Slim PS3 bundles included 120GB, 160GB, 250GB or 320GB hard drives, while the console itself was 1/3 smaller than previous models.

PS3 gets Move-ing

As the motion-controlled Nintendo Wii continues to sell pretty well, Sony announces PS3 motion controller PlayStation Move. While being technically impressive, Move fails to have the sales impact of Wii and Xbox Kinect.

PSN hack, Uncharted back

PS3’s online service, PlayStation Network, spends a month offline following an attack by hacker group Anonymous. In better news for PS3, Uncharted 3 wows gamers and critics with the incredible graphics and gameplay the series has become known for.

Super Slim PS3 arrives

Sony unveils its latest PS3 revision, which is half the size of the original models and is quickly dubbed the Super Slim. Two new PS3 bundles are available at launch: a 500GB hard disk edition and a version with a 12GB flash drive.

PS4’s older brother marches on

In the year of PS4’s launch, PS3 continues to impress with a brilliant slate of new games. New Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider and God of War titles all release alongside Game of the Year The Last of Us.

Just another year of PS3 classics

With so many PS3 players out there, developers continue to support the console with new games. 2014 brings Dark Souls II, Destiny, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, FIFA 15 and many more.

The 10-year lifespan was real

As predicted by former PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai, PS3 enters its 10th year in a strong position. Having sold over 80 million systems worldwide, PS3 still has a healthy 2015 line-up that includes Lego Dimensions, Mortal Kombat X and Metal Gear Solid V.

Sony was playing the long game and making a big loss on each console sale in the early days, in order to establish a user base. It’s still something of a bargain now when you consider the tech inside: media streamer, hard drive and a Blu-ray player.
